As my journey through the University Honors Gateway course has come to a close, I can only think ahead to the many possibilities available to me through this great program. After what seemed like an inauspicious second semester at UC, I found myself questioning my continuation at the university and heavily considered exploring other schools. This thought consumed much of my daily life and began to impact my involvement on campus and within the program. However, after much consideration and introspection, it became apparent to me that the possibilities available to me are endless. Ultimately, what I have the opportunity to accomplish in my next three years at UC are unparallel to what I could find at any other school. I am a firm believer that good things come to those who work for it and I am excited to utilize my strength as an achiever to gain varying experiences. More specifically, I am very passionate about advocating for and educating others about what it means to live with epilepsy and what epilepsy disorder is in general. In my time at UC, one of my main goals is to begin a 5k run/walk to bring light to epilepsy on campus and within the UC community. In order to accomplish this, I plan to utilize my honors advisor. After meeting it seemed that she would be a great resource to connect me with individuals who know a myriad of information about event planning. There are also several running groups found throughout Cincinnati that I know could be of use. In the future, I would like to become more involved in public health. I feel understanding this aspect of healthcare would be very beneficial in connecting with individuals of all backgrounds. Too often it seems healthcare officials are choosing to judge and dictate care based upon socioeconomic status or background of individuals when all individuals deserve to receive access to equal care. Obtaining more knowledge and experience in public health would allow me the opportunity to become more educated in why individuals face these lesser situations. This greater knowledge would open my eyes to understanding and being able to connect with these individuals. This pursuit of education in public health could be accomplished on campus by taking courses at UC. Not only this, but knowledge can also come in the form of hands-on experiences, which could include getting involved in volunteering and interacting one-on-one with individuals experiencing disparities. Finally, in this next year, I am beginning exploration in the field of business. I have applied to the Lindner College of Business for a management minor and am excited to have the opportunity to expand my breadth of knowledge into business academics. While not related to healthcare in terms of science or check-ups, I feel that at the end of a day healthcare is a business. Having this small amount of background would put me in a greater position to operate effectively in a hospital and work cooperatively with my administrative peers. I look forward to reflecting on all of these goals I hope to accomplish. Reflecting will allow me to remain accountable and really see how I have grown as a scholar and person. Wonderful things are ahead!
